Broadcasting in the heartbeat of Athens, WUOG, 90.5 FM has been playing alternative music over their airwaves for 50 years.
WUOG launched in October 1972 and is the University of Georgia’s alternative radio station. They played a noteworthy role in launching fellow Athens Music Walk of Fame inductee, R.E.M.’s career. WUOG is a noncommercial radio station run by a board of seventeen student executive directors assisted by a student organization advisor. The station commits themselves to being an alternative media outlet. All artists who appear on the station have either not had a song chart on The Billboard Hot 100 in the past 20 years or had an album that has entered the Top 20 of the Billboard 200. The goal of WUOG is for underappreciated artists to find exposure on campus, in Athens, and throughout the nation.
