East Clayton Street Infrastructure Project

What:         

A $12 million project to improve Clayton Street above ground and below is in the works.

Clayton Street is a major business corridor for downtown Athens, with shops, restaurants, clubs, and other businesses along both sides.

The project will update streetscapes such as sidewalks, benches, bike racks, lighting, landscaping, crosswalks, and pedestrian gathering spaces. Another key part is replacing aging stormwater drainage and sewer infrastructure and updating underground utilities.

How:          

Funding comes from the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST)  approved by Athens-Clarke County voters in November 2017.

Where:       

Clayton Street from Thomas Street to North Lumpkin Street is where work mainly will take place. Wall Street andNorth Jackson Street from East Broad Street to Washington Street also was considered during the design planning. plan. Learn more.
