East Clayton Street Improvements Project
Clayton Street is improving, and is Open for Business!
Pre-Dig Phase for 1st Block Complete
ACC Transportation & Public Works Department’s Streets & Drainage crews have completed the Pre-Dig Phase for the first block of the project approximately two weeks ahead of schedule. Although private utility companies may do some work in this area in-between, ACCGOV’s Streets & Drainage crews will not return to install stormwater pipe in this block until January 2019. Streetscape improvements will then follow beginning in April 2019.
Some changes to the design for the stormwater system on the second block between College Avenue and North Jackson Street will add some additional time to its timeframe and take away from some of the schedule savings. Even so, crews are tentatively scheduled to still be ahead of the original schedule after completing the next block barring any complications during digging.
Note that only the map of the current block reflects the date changes (see below or at accgov.com/clayton). Maps for other blocks will not be updated until closer to their actual work to make sure they are accurate. But know that crews will keep moving on as they finish work in areas.
Preliminary Plans Approved – Pre-Dig Begins Monday, June 18
The preliminary plan for the Clayton Street improvements was approved by the Mayor and Commission at the Tuesday, June 5 Regular Session.
- The pre-dig phase for stormwater improvements begins Monday, June 18 on the South Side of Clayton Street between North Lumpkin Street and College Avenue.
- Crews will work on one side of each block at a time, block by block
- Work days are Monday – Thursday, 6:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- The work zone will be up to ~200′ in one lane and parking spaces.
- Lane closures and parking space closures (10-15) will take place during the work days, although they will be opened up after Thursdays.
- The full pre-dig for all three blocks is expected to end by November 2018.
Public input is still being planned for the streetscape portion of the work (the above ground items: benches, lights, planters, public art, etc.), which has not been finalized. Stay tuned for more information on public input opportunities.
Prior to the pre-dig beginning, staff will visit with businesses in the area to provide additional information and answer questions.
A $12 million project to improve Clayton Street above ground and below is in the works.
Clayton Street is a major business corridor for downtown Athens, with shops, restaurants, clubs, and other businesses along both sides.
The project will update streetscapes such as sidewalks, benches, bike racks, lighting, landscaping, crosswalks, and pedestrian gathering spaces. Another key part is replacing aging storm water drainage and sewer infrastructure and updating underground utilities.
The exact start date is TBD. Work is expected to take 16-18 months.
Funding comes from the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST) approved by Athens-Clarke County voters in November 2017.
Clayton Street from Thomas Street to North Lumpkin Street is where work mainly will take place. Wall Street andNorth Jackson Street from East Broad Street to Washington Street also were considered during the design planning. plan. Learn more.
